Antelope Canyon - Arizona : Antelope Canyon is a remarkable canyon near the city of Page, Arizona. The Canyon lies within the current boundaries of the Navajo Nation, and is accessible by purchasing a permit and participating in a guided tour.

Antelope Canyon is a so-called 'slot' canyon, carved through soft sandstone by the action of rushing rainwater. Rains can be heavy, especially during monsoon season, and flash flooding has been responsible for deaths in the Canyon, and periodic closure of the site.

The canyon has remarkable light, especially during the non-Winter months, when beams of sunlight shine down through the narrow slot, reaching all the way to the canyon floor at certain times of the day. The pink and tan colors of the canyon walls, the ever-changing lighting, and the patterns caused by erosion of the relatively soft stone, make for an almost infinite variety of compositions and sights.

Insects and Other Invertebrates Up Close : Invertebrates are animals without backbones (without the vertebrae that make up the spinal column). Invertebrates include insects, spiders, and crustaceans, as well as animals like worms, jellyfish, and sponges - pretty much every animal except fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals. Invertebrates are thought to represent about 95% of all living things on earth. They are absolutely critical to human survival. By getting up close with macro photography equipment, I have tried to capture some of the beautifully complex structures, colors, and textures of these amazing animals - things that are hard to see with the naked eye.

Reno Air Races - T-6 Class : The T-6 Class at the Reno National Championship Air Races features match racing between the several variants of the venerated North America AT-6 trainer. Since all of the aircraft perform more-or-less the same, the focus is on race strategy and pilot skill rather than airframe or engine modifications. This makes for some exciting and close racing.

Shanghai : China's most populous city, with some 18 million residents, Shanghai is also among China's most modern and cosmopolitan cities.

Along the Huangpu River's West bank [Puxing] lies The Bund, Shanghai's historical financial center, with many buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries lining a one-mile stretch of the river. Behind The Bund, as well as along the East bank of the river [Pudong] now stand many skyscrapers containing offices, hotel rooms, and residences.

Shanghai is an interesting mix of older temples, colonial-era buildings, and ultra-modern skyscrapers.

Bali : Bali lies east of Java, about eight degrees south of the equator, and is the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It is one of Indonesia's thirty-three provinces.
The island spans about 153 km (95 mi) east-to-west and 112 km (69 mi) north-to-south - although the slow traffic makes it seem larger! The highest point is Mount Agung at 3,142 m (10,308 feet) high, an active volcano that last erupted in March 1963. Mount Batur (1,717 m/5,633 ft high) is also still active, last erupting in 1999-2000.

Your Bio

Hi, my name is Mark. Thanks for visiting.

Born in Annapolis, MD. Went to college in Salem, VA. Moved back to Maryland for four years, then to northern California. Fifteen years in the scientific instruments business. Lived in Madison, WI for three years, then the company asked me to move over to Japan. Lived in Tokyo 1989-1992.

Went back to Maryland again, then after a year and a half, decided the East Coast was not for me, and relocated to Arizona. Played guitar in various rock and country bands in Tucson, sunlighted [it's like "moonlighting", only it happens during the day] as a Web site designer.

Almost moved to NY for a girl, but it didn't work out. Started doing the Web site for the Reno Air Races. Bought a Canon EOS-1D and started taking photography much more seriously.

Got recruited to go back to Tokyo and worked for a radio programming company, building audio and video media for stores and the Web. Still did the Air Races. Bought more cameras and lenses.

Moved out of Tokyo down the coast to the Izu Peninsula. Ocean. Mountains. Space. Only a hundred thousand people instead of 12 million. But I still come up to the "Big City" of Tokyo regularly for work.

Always trying to make more time for photography and music. Photographers get up early, musicians stay out late. This won't be easy.
