Growing out of a massive rock formation, and exposed to incessant winds, trees like this grow slowly and in sometimes grotesque shapes. Such are called "krummholz" from the German krumm, "crooked, bent, twisted" and holz, "wood". The sunlit head of Long's Peak lies in the distance between the forks of the tree.
